Liong Sik under fire for saying its okay for men to cheat on their wives
Former MCA president Tun Dr Ling Liong Sik came under fire from women leaders for his remark that it is okay for men to cheat on their wives as long as they are not caught.
Ling made the remark at a press conference at Utar in Petaling Jaya on Tuesday in which he defended newly elected MCA deputy president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek over the sex VCD incident, when he was asked whether the morally tainted Chua should be appointed a Cabinet minister.
He said "men have to release their extra energy, and as long as they don't talk about it (cheating on their spouses) and not caught, there is no problem". His remark riled women leaders from both sides of the political divide.
DAP Bukit Mertajam MP Chong Eng said Ling is a typical male chauvinist.
She said Ling must know that Chua was elected as MCA No. 2 not because his extra-marital affair was accepted (by the delegates) but because he dared to admit his mistake and had apologised.
Wanita MCA chief Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun said Ling was sending a wrong message on moral values to the public as he had not only attempted to rationalise a wrong sexual behavior but also insulted men who are faithful to their wives.
She urged social leaders to mind what they say to avoid setting the wrong example. MCA Gelang Patah MP Tan Ah Eng said she did not agree with Ling that men can cheat on their wives just because have to release their extra energy.
"Women can also be full of energy, does it mean they can go out and cheat on their husbands. Will their husbands be able to accept that?" she asked. "We have to uphold good family values, men who commit adultery will hurt both their wives and mistresses in the end, resulting in family tragedies," she added.
She said she believed that men who cheat on their spouses are a minority and that the majority of men are faithful to their wives. Chairman of the women's wing of KL-Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall, Lee Sok Wah, said she was surprised at Ling's remark.
She said adultery is not acceptable whether it can be kept under wraps or not, what more for Ling to use "men has to let off their extra energy" to justify the act. She said the behaviors of prominent persons or politicians have social implications. "Although Chua has been given a mandate by the central delegates, who can guarantee that when he is appointed a minister, his moral lapses would not be used against him when it comes to fighting for Chinese's rights? " she asked.
However, head of Hua Zong (Federation of Chinese Associations of Malaysia) women's wing, Ooi Siew Kim, said Ling was entitled to his opinion as he is not representing any organisation. She said one should look at the remark with an open mind. I don't remember him commenting so daringly about the former Damansara Chinese primary school during his days in MCA...BUT looks like he did a good job for the UTAR! Did he?
